Jennifer Pearce

Hi there! My name is Jennifer and I am one of the newest members to MomTalk and JustKiddin'. I am a 40-year-old mother who works outside the home. I live with my husband of eleven years and our two young daughters. After being a stay-at-home-mother for six years, I re-entered the workforce when my husband was briefly unemployed. When he returned to work, I chose to keep working due to economics and the age of my daughters at the time. I now work as the advertising manager of a community newspaper and appreciate how working has gotten me much more involved in my community. However, I often miss the opportunity to spend more time with my daughters, or to volunteer more time with their school and activities. My older daughter is a 10-year-old fourth grader, and my younger daughter is a 6-year-old kindergartener. Their many activities and my husband’s complicated work schedule make scheduling our number one family challenge. He works a rotating shift in a retail store that includes many nights and weekends. We struggle to preserve our time together as a family and make the most of it, while still finding time to accomplish our individual goals and pursue our favorite interests. My interests include reading, writing and photography. I love taking family photos and completed a Project 365 in 2010, taking a photo a day for the year. It was a wonderful experience to document our life for a year and appreciate all the little pieces of it. I am currently working to put the 365 pictures into a scrapbook…if I can just find the time. I look forward to sharing our journey with you here on JustKiddin'!

Firsts in Year-Round School

We have survived our first week of school.  I have always wanted to experience year-round school and I have been very excited to give it a go this year, but I will have to say that starting school this past week in the middle of July, felt counter intuitive.  I think that it has been ingrained in me that September is back to school time and July is summertime.  It felt sort of odd to be doing school work.  Especially when trying to coordinate outside events like play dates and the summer reading program at the library because the world around us is on summer break yet we are not.  It is like we are going against the flow.

The kids had no issues.  They are glad to have something to do on these hot summer days that are inside….the boredom of summer has ended and they are happy to be working on school work again.  Really it is so hot and with the thunderstorms lately, the kids haven’t really played much outside.  They haven’t wanted to go to the park or do much outside activities like that because of the heat.  So they spend way too much time inside playing the Wii and watching movies.  At least now, their days are more structured and they are able to make better use of their time.  They have no trouble with the fact that it is July.  They are also looking forward to having three weeks of vacation after each nine weeks of school.  And I will have to say that I am too.

Right now my husband is so busy that we can’t take a summer vacation anywhere, so I am hoping that come September when we get our first break, things will have slowed a bit for him and we can take a break.  When it is time to take our first break, the weather should be a bit cooler and they will be able to play more outside and we can go to the park and since tourist season will be over we can head to the beach.  I am hoping by the end of the school year I will like the schedule more than I do right now.

Are your kids in year-round school?  How do you like it as a parent?

This is our second year doing year-round schooling and we love it. It does feel odd as an adult raised in a traditional schedule to start school in July, but this Fall Break is going to be so nice. The weather is usually cooler and it’s also easier for my husband to request time off.
